New rap music: some good stuff. |

| You've heard the old joke that rap rhymes with crap: not necessarily so anymore. Don't get me wrong--I've listened, or tried to listen to some pretty awful rap music over the last few years, and some of it just doesn't do it for me. There's old rap music that has hard core roots--it's out to insult and offend, or at least that's the way it appears to me as I listen to the lyrics. I just couldn't find a common line of decency in it, but maybe that was the point--it wasn't about decency--it was about expressing anger and discontent, or a social commentary on socially unacceptable behavior: that's probably more what it was about than anything else. But now that the genre has been around for a while there's some new rap music that's actually decent and engaging. Some of the new rap music goes out of its way not to offend (as did a limited amount of some of the old). But some of the new rap music artists are out to entertain without offending, and they're doing a good job. So, if you've given up on your desire to listen to rap music, get online and listen to some of the new artists that are out to produce non-offensive new rap music. |
